As a child, my parents taught me the importance of understanding and being aware of your background. By teaching me the language, history, and culture of Iran, I learned where I came from and developed a stronger connection between my parents and myself. I developed an even better foundation of persian culture as I went through 9 years of Farsi school. In the captivating time I was at Fari school, I overcame obstacles as I mastered writing, reading, and history of Iran.
I faced a setback that held me back from efficiently learning the language; I began having difficulty advancing my vocabulary and properly conversing. I made it my mission to get more comfortable speaking the language itself. Every day after high school, I would come home to discuss my day in Farsi with my parents. This past year, I have met a mentally-disabled student in my class who struggled to comprehend the various words we would go over. I noticed frustration when he couldn’t grasp correct the correct words or grammar. In order to motivate him and instill confidence, I would work with him during class to and mentor him to help instill confidence in him. Throughout the semester the teacher and I noticed improvement in his language skills, there was a noticeable shift in his demeanor from dispirited to confident. While this process took a while, the result was compensated with a new-found inner-happiness I gained through the many smiles and hugs I received while helping
