• Created a better structure within the established program by recruiting volunteers from CSUN to make parents’ experience more helpful with a one-on–one interaction. Follow up with CSUN students to make sure that they finished the program they committed to and that they did their hours/ responsibilities so that we could finish the project on time.

Growing up in a Mexican-American household, I grew up in a type 2 diabetes/cancer prone environment in which lead me to do my own behavioral changes in my family. For example, there was instance during week 3 (September 2015) of the program where I was able to encourage a dad in the contemplation stage of change to engage in conversation and start thinking about future changes for him and his family. As we started to look at the nutrition labels I mentioned if anyone knew the difference between “good fats and bad fats.” The father was stunned. He had no idea there could possibly be such thing as a “good fat.” I used this time to start a conversation to remind parents that all foods can be build as part of a healthy lifestyle.
