I’ll never forget how frustrated I felt when I couldn’t speak to my daughter’s friends fluently in English and because of that my daughter didn’t like to introduce me to her friends. Everything got worst when I had to speak with her teacher and explain about the reason for her absence. These situations were my biggest encouragements to learn English because in my country, I used to be active in her school and it was an important part in our lives. The society is not always our ideal, but we have to learn how we can succeed. In the society, we are judged by many factors like appearance, religion, economic level, race, manners and many other different things. Unfortunately, not only are we judged, but we judge each other. When we hear people speak, we may become prejudiced about their personality immediately, even sometimes it goes further to discrimination. Language can show a lot about us so we have to be aware with our word choices and the order that we put words together. We can be rejected in the society just because of our language and this can provide an isolated society. It happens not only about immigrants who are from foreign countries, but it even happens about different neighborhoods in the same cities. Different accents can provide different groups in the same area that can reject each other. When we hear someone’s talking, we unconsciously think about rejection or acceptance of that person.
