In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Hurston writes about Janie Crawford - the main character - being caught by her grandmother, Nanny, kissing Johnny Taylor - a local boy - on the fence. Nanny, realizing that Janie is starting to grow into her womanhood, wants her to marry Logan Killicks, a well-respected man in town. Janie reacts to Nanny’s decision by rebelling and eventually running away with another man:

Trauma people go through at a young age can follow them through their lives and affect their whole lives and how they think about themselves and the world around them. The way parent/guardians treat children can affect the their way of life once they become older. Constantly looking for approval can lead to weakening of relationships and cause people to put their problems before others. Abuse of trauma a child goes through can deteriorate their self esteem and it can also lead to hatred.
