“At time of piece the mind will wander, the mind will falter. Why so fixed on the end? At times of rest dreaming is violent, the imagination is restless. Why so fixed on destruction? At times of love the heart bleeds, the soul stays scarred. Why stay chained to agony? At times of understanding the soul withes and wrestles for a new answer, the journey stays uncompleted. Why run from completion”? (Charles Hickey) This was a poem called The End from Charlie Hickey, a severe paranoid schizophrenic who had been battling the disease for 35 years. Charles left this poem on the table four hours at the night before Charles had died. Charles had no clue …show more content…
Schizophrenia is still a mystery and people aren’t exactly sure what causes it. What researchers do know is that paranoid schizophrenia is caused by some genetic factors. Normal individuals who do not have a relative with the disease have a 1% chance of having it. First-degree relatives have a 10% chance of inheriting the disease and that’s how researchers know that genetics is involved. In identical twins, if one identical twin has paranoid schizophrenia then the other one has a 40-50% chance of also developing it. This is also how researchers know that genetics isn’t all of what causes schizophrenia. So what else can be causing it? Researchers have thrown out there that it can also be caused by environmental factors; where the person lived, what type of environment they grew up in, etc. It is also proven that factors that happened while the schizophrenic was still in the mother’s womb could have played a huge role in developing the disease. If the mother was unhealthy, starved herself, or had gotten some type of infection could have caused the later onset of the mother’s child developing schizophrenia. If a mother had a difficult child birth, that could have led to the child later on becoming schizophrenic as well. (Martin, 2011, p. 21-22) Scientists also believe that an imbalance in the interrelated chemical reactions of the brain involving the neurotransmitters which are …show more content…
Schizophrenia occurs in about 1% of the population and the severness of it between the patients varies. Paranoid schizophrenia is the most common type of schizophrenia where the schizophrenic hears voices in the head and believes that someone is always out to get the patient. Paranoid schizophrenic’s have a complete distortion of reality and have trouble living a normal, functional life and taking care of the body properly. Luckily, researchers are still trying to figure out a cure for schizophrenia and the medicines out today for the disease are helping schizophrenic’s cope with it. Researchers are still not exactly what causes schizoprenia to happen, just assumptions. Researchers and doctors do know that it is partly genetic and the rest could be environment or from the mother during pregnancy. Hopefully someday researchers and doctors can find out exactly what it causing schizophrenia and also find a solution to completely cure
