Indonesian nation owns Pancasila as the principle in living a life. Pancasila should be the reference of the nation to behave in everyday life. Pancasila values the freedom of faith and tolerance within each people. In fact, freedom of faith is considered as a fundamental thing for Indonesia, that is the reason why “Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa” principle is placed as the number one among all other 4 principles in Pancasila.
“Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa” as the first principle is accompanied by a hope that the people of Indonesia can hold on to the first principle in order to live in harmony within a country that has a diversity of ethnics, cultures, and religions. In addition, article 28I (1) of the 1945 Constitution also recognizes the right to religion as a human right. Furthermore, article 29 verse (2) of the 1945 Constitution also says that The State guarantees the independence of each of its people to embrace religion.
We are embarrassed by the principle of “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" (unity in diversity), when the people of Indonesia cannot be united. Religious egoism seemingly still glorify with the belief that religion or sect that a person follows is the rightest one among all. This way of thinking tends to justify anarchic behavior towards people of a different religion or sect. Assault in the name of religion on behalf of God has blinded many people to put aside their conscience and act intolerantly to others.
When we think about it again, such intolerant behavior within religious groups occurs when a person is not animating Pancasila deeply. We know that Pancasila has been taught since elementary school and even to college under the subject Pancasila and Citizenship Education (PPKn). So, why does this kind of problem still occur? For example, when I was in elementary school, my PPKn teacher in most of the time asked us, the students, to do our PPKn LKS (Student Worksheet) or submitting a paper. If we worked on the task diligently and could do the School Final Examination (UAS) well, then good grades were already on the hand. In fact, good grades did not seem difficult to achieve if the requirements were just tasks and tests. In doing the task, students could count on the help of friends, to be specific, cheating, and the teacher would not know, because the answers in LKS are absolute answers and not the analysis answers. In doing UAS, students only needed to memorize all the theories that had been given by the teacher, then when the test is over, all of which had been studied would only remained a
