Some of the many symptoms of anxiety include dizziness, sleeping problems, dry mouth, muscle tension, excessive shaking, suicidal thoughts, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, nausea, and not being able to sit still or stay calm (“Anxiety Disorders” np). People with an anxiety disorder are three to five times more likely to go to the doctor and six times more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric disorders than those who do not suffer from anxiety disorders. Due to all the doctor visits, medication, therapy, and support needed for anxiety sufferers, the United States spends an average of 42 billion on this disorder annually. There is no current proof of genetics in the cause of anxiety, but most scientists and doctors believe that anxiety disorders are developed from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events. Anxiety disorders may be caused by problems in the functioning of brain circuits that regulate fear and other emotions. Many studies have shown that severe stress can change the way nerve cells transmit information from one region of the brain to another.
