Watch Out for Children
Each week, at least 50 children in the United States are involved in a backover accident. While the majority of children are able to be treated in an emergency room and survive the accident, sadly about four percent of children hit by a vehicle backing up do not live. The majority of the drivers are parents or another close relative of the child, and one-year-olds are the most common victims.
If you are a parent, one of the most important ways you can prevent your child from being a backover statistic is to teach your children safety around vehicles. Even if you have taught your children safety around vehicles, make sure you practice safety yourself. Be aware of the location of your children and other children who might be near your vehicle, particularly toddlers and other smaller children. Use your mirrors and look behind you when backing up. If you have one, use your back-up camera, but do not rely entirely upon the back-up camera. You may even want to roll down your window so you can better hear children. If you have an adult passenger, especially if you live in an area with a lot of children, you can have the passenger get out and back you
