Why did Communism collapse in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union? Identify and explain any three reasons. Devote a separate paragraph to each example.
i. One reason why Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union collapsed was because the Soviet Union’s economy couldn’t compete with the western countries. The United States was an economic powerhouse and, also, a capitalist country. Because this the United States was a capitalist country, citizens were allowed to purchase their own goods at any time. In addition to this, they were also allowed to own private property. This system was different than the Soviet Union’s economic system, which was based on public ownership of property and the non-consumption of individual goods at any time. ii. The second reason why Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union collapsed was because of the changes that Gorbachev had made. Gorbachev thought that the only way the Soviet Union could be fixed was if certain changes were made and these changes included reducing military spending and also, ending censorship so that other problems could be discussed. In addition to these changes, he also formed what is known as the Perestroika, which were a series of changes made to restructure the government.
