Nichols was the third of four siblings and was raised on farm by his parents Joyce and Robert Nichols while growing up. In his free time he cared for injured birds and animals, also he was good at running machinery and keeping the farm equipment up to date. In 1973 Nichols graduated high school and then attended college at Central Michigan University. He did not attend college long, he dropped out after one semester when one of his three brothers was in an accident that involved a fuel tank explosion. Nichols provided the skin he needed for grafting. In 1976 he moved to Colorado and got his real estate license, soon after he closed on his big first
