Obesity is a condition of being overweight or fat. Also it means having too much body fat. Being overweight and obese is different because being overweight means weighing too much. A person can weight more because of extra muscle, bone, or water. If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 30 or greater then you are classified as being overweight. Ways to measure obesity is BMI or measuring waist circumference.
Obesity is caused by many things. Many teenagers’ behaviors are reasons they become obese. There behaviors cause them to make poor eating choices such as overeating or binging. Also some people eat too much. Genetics also could be a reason for being obese. Not everybody that has obesity problems in the family become obese. Some genes can cause certain disorders. Medical conditions such as endocrine and neurological problems can play a part of it too. Another cause is steroid and some psychiatric medications. A big cause is stressful life events or changes occurring. There could be a family or peer problems happening in the teenagers life. Some kids have low self-esteem and can be depressed. It is an increased risk of having emotional problems too. Also the environment people live in can have an impact on it. People are becoming lazier. Most people drive instead of walking or take elevators instead of taking the stairs. Also teenagers are eating out more and not eating properly. Some health risks are liver and gallbladder disease and coronary heart disease. You can get type two diabetes from obesity. High blood pressure and cancers such as endometrial, breast, and colon are more risks. Dyslipidemia such as, high levels of triglycerides or high total cholesterol is another risk. You can have a stroke if you are obese. Also you are at risk breathing problems such as sleep apnea which causes you to stop breathing for short periods of time while you sleep. Eating disorders are associated with being obese such as anorexia and bulimia. Obesity can cause joint and bone problems. You have a greater risk of being obese as an adult if you are obese as a teenager. Depression, anxiety, and eating disorder may occur also.
Teenage obesity can be prevented in many ways. One way to prevent it is keeping track of your BMI, weight, and waist circumference. Also being active can help. If you exercise you will lose weight. Also focusing on portion size will help because you won’t be eating as much. It is important to maintain and reach a proper body weight. If you follow a healthy eating plan or diet and watch your intake of calories per day you will live a healthier
