A language teacher in elementary school helped to diversify my reading and introduced the power of critical thinking. She would have us read a chapter from a literature and discuss it in detail for weeks before forming any kind of judgment. Every now and then, she will have us read the same book twice and to our surprise we grasp a new lesson with a completely fresh perspective. For example for me as a microbiology technologist, I understand and master all the necessary procedures to identify and isolate all pathogenic bacteria’s in order to help physician properly diagnosis and treat his/her patient. In 21st century aside any proficiency, digital literacy is an imperative skill as it holds tremendous parts of our day-to-day life. Again as a microbiologist it is critical I acquire digital proficiency, as 100% of my works needs to be documented in the computer. As we move from one generation to another and/or from continent to continent how we define and measure the quality of literacy altered and tailored to fit the majority. At early age literacy specifically in terms of reading, speaking and writing best achieved with some kind of support system. For me understanding significance role of gender and cultural influence helped me to overcome barriers and changed how I define literacy. Through my mentors and idols I was able to step back and assess why I am the way I am and that was a huge revelation that changed my life. As a bilingual person, I also understand and take into big consideration when I define others’ literacy. Literacy is a concept that has proved to be complex and dynamic and absolutely impossible to give it worldwide definition without recognizing multiple
