Anders Breivik is known to the public eye as a mass murder. On July 22, 2012 Breivik detonated a bomb that was set off in the center of the Norwegian capital. Following the detonation of the bomb Breivik fled the seen to a local island where he shot and killed sixty-nine people. Norway does not have the death penalty; therefore, Breivik was sentenced to the maximum of twenty-one years in prison in which he must serve a minimum of ten years.

Yates was unwillingly admitted to a treatment center due to her illness. On June 20, 2001 after her husband departed for work she drowned all five of her children. During the trial Yates pleaded innocence by reason of insanity. In March of 2002 the jury rejected the insanity plea and she was sentenced to forty years with the possibility of parole. However, January of 2006 the Texas Court of appeals reversed the sentence due to errors in the previous trial. They believed that the psychiatrist swayed the case, when he established that Yates was aware of her actions at the time of her crime.
