When you are on some kind of social media like Snapchat,Facebook or Instagram, do you think it can affect you physically and mentally? Social media can affect you physically and mentally by giving you anxiety and lowering your self esteem. Also, it can influence the minds of adolescents to believe it is all about the “likes” mindset which causes them to be controlled and focused on how many likes they get. In addition, social media can bring in predators and bullies. In this society of adolescents Social media has taken control. Social media makes adolescents post pictures that negatively impacts them. Adolescents post what they think will get them likes no matter the topic. For example “Photos depicting cigarettes and alcohol. But the type of image had no impact on the number of "likes" given by the teens. they were instead more likely to 'like' the more popular photos, regardless of what they showed. This could lead to… negative influences from peers online” ( East). This evidence reveals that teenagers “like” post that have a bad influence on them. Also teenagers don't pay much mind to what their liking or what they are looking at. Teenagers only pay attention to how many “likes” they have on the picture. If it is popular then teenagers will like it. So if a picture with alcohol and drugs is going around and is popular teens will like it unaware that its affecting them mentally by changing their perspective on certain things. The amount of time adolescents spend of social media affects the decisions they make. A “like” driven society where their decisions are based on the “likes”. Homayoun says that “in an environment where teens spend around nine hours using some form of online media every day, it doesn’t take long for them to be influenced by an “all-about-the-likes” sense of values that can potentially lead to life-altering decisions”(Homayoun). Adolescence nowadays spend around 9 hours of using social media as Homayoun said and this affects the decisions they make during life in general.
