It can be looked at as a form of class stratification in the navy. Officers have their own dining area and get their own rooms usually or have just one roommate while the enlisted have to sleep in berthing’s. The dining area for the officers has different tableware and silverware and they are not supposed to eat in the enlisted mess. After officers there is another class, it is the senior enlisted who also have their own sleeping quarters and dining hall away from the officers and junior enlisted. Junior enlisted is classified from rank E-1 to E-6 and Senior enlisted is classified from rank E7-E9. E-7 is the rank of chief in the navy, these can be considered like the tribe chiefs we talked about in class, they have authority over junior enlisted and have a lot of respect if they are considered good chiefs. Officers often look to chiefs for their opinions and knowledge as they have a lot of experience that the officer might not have. In fact, one of their jobs is to train junior officers on how to lead.
