Nature vs Nurture: Which Is More Influential on Human Behavior?
The debate on which between nature and nurture (genetics and environment) is more influential on human behavior is a long standing one that can be traced to the 17th Century Greek philosophy (Kam, Wicherts, Dolani, & Maas, 2013; pp.2). There is consensus among scholars and researchers of these contentious issues that both nature and nurture play a role in the development of behavioral patterns in human being (Levitt, 2013; par.4). This essay argues that nature is more influential in shaping human behavior than nurture.
Genetics is a biological concept that dictates that human beings are born with a set of proteins that determine all aspects of their life; both physical such as the color of eyes, skin, built and other physical attributes as well as cognitive ones such as behavior. This molding suggests that there is a purposeful re-conditioning of what is already presented and created by nature (Oxfordshire County Council, pp.1). To illustrate this point of view, suppose a child is born with Autism, there is very little that behaviorist and psychologists can do to reverse the effects of the condition because the condition is natural.
