During this time, British General William Howe and his army seized Kip’s Bay in Manhattan so Hale made his way back to New York City in order to gain intelligence on their next attack. Amidst the confusion of the fire which broke out in the city on September 20th, Hale was supposedly recognized as a patriot by a Queen’s ranger and captured the following day.
