For some time Muslims in Britain and across the western world have spoken out about the representation of their religion and how the act of a small minority has affected them all from their daily lives to how their religion is portrayed as a whole
From the actual inaccuracies and negativity prevalent in media discourse, they feel that people’s perceptions of their faith and beliefs are adversely affected by such representation (Ameli et al., 2007)
Nevertheless the media is less prone to publicise British problems that inconsequently are major highlights in the Islamic religion such as drinking and divorce are highly frowned upon 'Yet there are estimated to be 1.6 million problem drinkers in England ' (Campbell, 2014) whereas British media and society are quick to judge the wrong doings of Islamic people but will not publicise in western media how they promote non-drinking societies, their values are ones that British society are not pugnacious. Being an influential opinion former over the Catholic Church he is being placed in a position to intentionally allow the audience to question their attitudes and opinions; ‘Readers, whether they are attentive citizens or interested officials, tend to lose sight of the fact that news is not reality, but a sampling of sources’ portrayal of reality, mediated by news organizations’ (Sigal, 1998) the news stories would have been constructed and altered to portray the story in a particular light and would be targeted at their niche audience, with aim to achieve readership success. It would have a direct and immediate effect on the passive audience ‘information plays an important role in the communication process and that mass media have only a limited influence on most individuals’(Postelnicu,2014) taking this in to consideration to be affected by news stories and the mass media, you need to be culturally communicated and connected with that particular subject, in terms of the news stories in questions as a person your religious associations
