Religion was a major connection across the Afro-Eurasian continent. It had an enormous impact on many political decisions, economical agreements and cultural values. The BBC documentary, “When the Moors Ruled in Europe” was a great example of religion's impact on society. Islam was the fastest spreading religion. Islam’s rapid expansion was the result of Muslim trade routes.…
Religion can be considered to be the common human culture, there is a mysterious myth, it is the human spirit. The Faith is the highest embodiment of a talent human subjective response, it is the paradise of the human consciousness of the universe, the earth's history beyond the form of fate, it is of our human existence and the integrity of the relationship between the objective world, it is a kind of metaphysical…
Seven Tunes Heard in China (在中国听到的七个曲调), by Bright Sheng (盛宗亮,Shèng Zōngliàng), was commissioned for Yo Yo Ma (马友友) and was first performed on October 9, 1995. The piece is based on folk melodies and other songs collected by Bright Sheng from various regions of China. Many Chinese-American composers went through the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) but after, the conservatories reopened in 1977, and they were among the first to enroll and graduate. Many of them after pursued their doctoral degrees and studied with the same teachers at Columbia University (not far from here!). Many of these composers are often characterized for bringing Eastern and Western traditions together in a kind of cultural mixing.…
On November 3, 2015 I sat in the red velvet stadium seating of the west campus performance hall for the performance of Isaac Bustos and Mariana Gariazzo. Both performers are faculty of the Texas A&M Performance Studies department. The pieces performed varied from solo pieces and duet performances. The theme of the presentation was titled “the influence of folk music in classical repertoire”. The pieces performed included: Prelude 1 and 2 of Heitor Villa-Lobos, Bachianas Brasilerias #5 by Heitor Villa-lobos, Entr’act by Jacques Ibert, and three pieces from Astor Piazolla Bordel 1900, Café 1930, and Nightclub 1960.…
Plato, a famous Greek Philosopher once said, “I would teach children music, physics and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.” As a society, we thrive off the arts, most specifically music. No one can honestly say they have gone a few hours without thinking about, humming, whistling, singing, or even playing a song. Yes, drumming your pencil or pen against anything counts. Why would society deny their children the amazing opportunity to learn something this special?…

Musicians played a tough role during the modern civil rights movement. Musicians at the time were more focused on making sure their political views were heard then putting out music that appealed to everyone. Black music was a way to express the struggle of freedom and pursuit of equality. The Albany movement help to put forth songs that’s help people get through there tough times. The Albany movement consisted of gospel hymns many of these same songs are used today during protest.…
Because I find Jewish culture interesting, I did research on Klezmer music. Klezmer music was the traditional music of the Jews of Eastern Europe. The most influential form of musical expression in the Jewish community was the singing of the khazn. The rabbinate (the association of religious authorities) didn’t allow singing khazn because they were distracting the worshipers. The Hasidizm which is (a charismatic religious sect) created a spiritual interpretation of piety encouraging song and dance rather than religious texts.…

Wu Cuiyuan describes her family as “good people”, as opposed to “real people”, and says “they never tuned into local folk-opera, comic opera, that sort of thing, but listened only to the symphonies of Beethoven and Wagner; they didn’t understand what they were listening to, but still they listened” (Chang 1943). The family in this quote avoids local, Chinese stations, and only listens to Western music. Chang makes a point of saying that they don’t understand it, but listen anyway. This listening without understanding reflects how western culture had been embraced in Shanghai- that people dutifully absorb western culture without skepticism or genuine interest, but only as a requirement for being “good…
It is amazing to see how religion has made such an impact on music and dancing. As far back as the Renaissance religion had an enormous impact on both. During the Renaissance it was mostly the Roman Catholic Church that had powerful control. If you were a troubadour or trouvères participating in secular music and not in the office or mass participating in Gregorian Chant than you were considered part of the lowest social class. However, if it was not for the troubadours and trouvère we probably would not find one of my favorite musical instruments (the fiddle) in western folk music or bluegrass.…
Introduction In this essay, I argue against the statement that China will be a leading market for both recorded and live music by 2028. My argument is based on the fact that China is one of the leading countries in pirated music. In spite of the digital advancements in the country that are making music lovers buy authentic live and recorded music, China is still rated as the leading country in pirated music. If China is to be the leading market in live and recorded music by 2028, its traditional values and cultures will have to shift dramatically to accept all music content locally and globally.…
In about 5000 years of its existence, there have been constant development and changes in distinctive area of the Chinese culture. These areas include art, craft, drama, music, opera, etc. Even with these changes, the Chinese people maintained their cultural values by observing notable festivals like the “Chinese New Year” no matter where they are located around the world. There are threats to the culture from the western countries due to the constant migration of its people to the west. Most of them are getting westernized and tends to forget about their root in the…
The Medieval and Renaissance periods present two distinct cultures and worldviews in the human development. Unlike the Middle-Ages, several Renaissance scientists desired to learn about the earth apart from the idea of a Divine Creator, and philosophers brought in humanistic thinking. Innovations during this period like the gunpowder, telescope, microscope and the print press changed dramatically the people 's lifestyles and views of the world around them. Religion also varied greatly between these two eras. Reformation brought about turmoil during the Renaissance as opposed to the monastic life of the medieval period.…
From the 12th century to the 21st century music has been a way of living. People around the world listen to music every day, even though music has changed drastically over the years. But why did this happen? Music has been changed in many ways and this tells the difference of classical and modern music. For example music has changed by the: adding of effects, change of message and change of purpose.…
