VCS3 which was their first commercial synthesiser, main features are 3 controllable oscillators (VCOs), a noise generator, 2 inputs, ring modulator, low pass filter, reverberation level meter, trapezoid envelope generator, and stereo outputs. Another synthesiser that is used in this track is Synthi AKS; the continuous 8 notes sequence that probably everyone heard from the beginning. This synth is a successor to the Synthi A, which came out in 1971. Synthi A was basically a portable version of VCS3 but later on, they added K (keyboard) and S (Sequencer) to it and invented Synthi AKS.
not just the VCS3’s sound effect, but the most of the sound effects in this song have been panned from one side to another side, fades in and out by changing the volume so they sound like they come and go one after another.
In fact, Pink Floyd really focused on the possibility of stereophonic sounds even it wasn’t focused back then, due to the recording environment. Around the time, standard recording studios had 4, or maybe 8-tracks mixer for the whole band. However, for the recordings of this album, the studio used 16-track mixers which gave much wider options of stereo sound
