Oba Ovoramwen receives messages of the visit of the white man. The British representative present a document of treaty to the Benin Empire to offer them protection but the Oba sees the treaty base on false claim. In refusing to sign the document, the Oba appointed Obaseki as an intermediary between the Oba and the white man. The Oba in doubt of the duty of Obaseki to his fatherland and honesty of the whitemen, placed a ban on external trade and all market shout-down. 2.12 Theoretical Framework Ohaja (2003:63-640) as cited by Samuel (2014) argues that knowledge does not exist in a vacuum. In every discipline, there must be a body of theories that provide the explanation for the observable phenomena in that field. This is the reason for the selection of the social cognitive theory. Social cognitive theory is the view that people learn by watching others. It holds that portions of an individual’s knowledge acquisition can be directly related to observing others within the context of social interactions, experiences, and outside media influences. The theory states that when people observe a model performing behaviour, they remember the sequence of events and use the information to guide subsequent behaviours. According to Bandura (2005) social cognitive theory takes on an agent like perspective to change, development and adaptation.
