At the beginning of the 20th century, many factors inspired the United States to declare war on Germany and join arms with the Allied Powers. The two elements that seemed crucial were America’s financial interests with England and President Woodrow Wilson’s choice to have peace talks in Europe. However, because of the time this took place and the situation that America was in, the decision to go take arms would be a hard one to make. During the commencement of the war, it became clear that the right choice for Wilson was to keep the United States a neutral nation.…
American history-- compared to the rest of modern civilization has been a short one. Only 239 years ago did we become a nation; Over those 239 years we have been at war for about 222 of them. Some may call that an accomplishment and most others would call it an abomination. The war of 1812 follows the American theme of loving to push natives out of their home land. But, this war in particular goes a little deeper than just that.…
In the documents from pages 47-69, from the “Eyewitness to America” book, the documents are about the Thirteen colonies gaining independence. While in each document the reasons for why each group fights for the independence of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain are different, they all lead to everyone in the Thirteen colonies beginning to fight the British for their freedom from acts that the English king is imposing on them from 3,000 miles away. These documents show that everyone in the Thirteen Colonies joined together to achieve the same goal, that goal being, gaining independence from Britain. The juxtaposition of the documents that show the Thirteen colonies fighting for certain rights in each document, demonstrates their desire…
The United States has always considered itself a shining city on a hill, a place that makes the rest of the world better. This is the narrative that many Americans have been sold, that whenever the United States intervenes, it is always for the better of not only that country, but the rest of the world. In spite of this narrative, the United States has not always had the best intentions, and many of their interventions have left lives and countries in ruin. Many of the darker parts of American interventionism come to bear in the book Empire’s Workshop by Greg Grandin, which discusses American imperialism in Latin America. Despite the fact that this book assumes a certain level of expertise on United States policy in Latin America, it is still…

In his article “The Tragedy of the American Military”, James Fallows discusses how the majority of the American public holds the military in high esteem, but has little to no knowledge about military affairs. In turn, the United States is more likely to go to war and turn a blind eye towards sound military spending. Although I agree with the author on most of his arguments, I do not completely agree with all of them. The author states that the press does not voice public skepticism about the military as they do about other American institutions. I believe that the public is in more in touch with other institutions that have a direct effect on them.…
