People who have suffered with addiction or have seen the horrible addiction journey may find this book very helpful and interesting. The way this book is written has the ability to draw a very diverse audience in. This novel is intended to portray the very real conditions of meth addiction. The audience can relate to and learn from the examples in her books. Crank is a street name for crystal meth, the book is titled after the ‘monster’ that the novel is directly about. This title is an appropriate choice for the book, it leaves enough room for the reader to wonder what kind of journey they will be exposed to. In most versions of the jacket cover, the title Crank is written in all caps in a white substance, aka. crystal meth. It is on a plain, dark, black background. This is incredible symbolism and the font of the title alone is enough to make the reader feel an eerie and suffocating emotion. Some secondary characters are Kristinas father, mother, and sister. Everything circulates around Kristina, she comes from a broken home of divorced parents. Adam, Brendan, and Chase are three boys that Kristina meets during her story. Each one encourages her addiction in different ways. Kristinas parents divorced because her dad was an addict. A few years after the divorce her mother remarried. Kristina went from having a well rounded personality to being an addict after making a single bad decision. The whole book is about Kristina battling her addiction and falling deeper into the abyss, all while figuring out how to deal with news of her unexpected pregnancy towards the end. I can relate to Kristina and her son Hunter because my mother has an addictive personality and has her own story with ‘the monster’. For me reading this book helped me understand what my mother may have been going through and even some of my own emotions. For anyone who hasn’t had these experience it is still a very interesting and informative read. Not only does it allow people to see inside the mind of an addict who is addicted to such an aggressive drug, but it helps the reader make a sub conscious choice to stay away from drugs and harmful
