“A Move, a Word and My Family’s Battle” written by Patricia E. Bauer is about the battle one family had with the infamous “R” word. The explanation of the issue takes place at the family’s local movie theater in 2008, when the Patricia’s daughter, Margaret, was called a retard by a couple pre-teen girls. Margaret was noticeably hurt by this remark. Claim of value is used in different ways for the different views of people. As for the families with mentally disabled kids and adults, the importance of care for those is a great deal more than those who don’t know anyone with a mental disability.…
What does it truly mean to be intellectual? Some may say that being intellectual means being book smart, while others say that it is being street smart. In an entry of “Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff, Graff believes that one can actually become intellectual if they start learning about topics they actually enjoy and then slowly start easing into challenging topics. While many argue that intellectualism is limited to the studies of school, non-academic activities such as traveling and truly experiencing these events can teach one about the history of a place, the culture, and how to solve problems. When asked why people decide travel they just say that they travel for vacation, but what they do not realize is that traveling is a learning experience.…
1. The Manzanar Annual Pilgrimage has come a ritual where Japanese American travel to the site that they were kept during the world war. These Japanese Americans where stripped from their lifestyles and forces to come to different camps around the United States, due to the dear of them helping the Japanese in the war. The United States dismantled these sights after the war, one because they knew it was wrongful in the eyes of what the constitution and the states were built on. The critical faith theory is having Americans take responsibility for they knew it was a wrong situation and learning from the mistakes that were done.…
Argument Analysis of “Defining Mental Disability” Defining mental disability is not, under any circumstances, an easy task. One wants to be politically correct, but without actually going through life every day with a disability, how can one even start to define it? One cannot.…
Throughout the world, numerous people tend to misinterpret the true meaning of intellectualism. As perceived by many, an intellectual is a person who is involved in critical studies, thoughts, and proposes solutions to normal day-to-day situations. In contrast to such definition, two pieces of literature that have unique explanations are “Reading Rhetorically” by Rose and “Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff. In their articles, both authors urge reconsideration of what is considered “intellectual or intelligent.”…
The treatment of people with mental illnesses and handicaps has been a long lasting problem because of the misunderstandings of police, mental hospitals, and society. Many documentaries and movies have been made to show the lives lead in mental hospitals and institutions. News reports have talked about police shooting suspects who have been mentally ill. Most of these events could have been avoided if people could try and learn about mental illnesses, instead of hiding them away from the rest of the world. Just because they are physically or mentally different from the norm, society expects them to be maintained at an institution like dogs in a dog pound.…
Samual Yisehak C. Petitti ENGL 1105-42R 29 September 2016 Hidden Intellectualism Response Gerald Graff, a professor of English at the University of Illinois, wrote Hidden Intellectualism, an excerpt from the book They Say/I Say. The essay tackles the issue that one cannot be intelligent in any context except for the academic world. Intellectualism by any other subject is just as academic. I agree with Graff’s main point, however, I take umbrage with small details used in the essay.…
It is quite upsetting that with all of the modern day focus on political correctness we have yet as a human race to understand and assist the mentally disabled. Throughout the past many people were looked down upon and misunderstood. the worst of these offenses was directed toward the mentally disabled. Such a culture is revealed through Lennie, a disabled giant of a ban who can not remember the simplest of things and is obsessed with anything soft. Although the mentally impaired can be highly functioning members of society; they can be, at times, a burden to their caretakers.…
Fairman maintains, “Invariably, negative connotations materialize around what ever new word is used.” He debates how the “r” word was originally used to take place of the insulting word idiot, yet still the word retarded has been turned into a negative insulting word. Then the phrase “intellectual disability” became the new official diagnosis. In 2010 the family of Rosa Marcellino a little girl with Downs Syndrome helped to pass “Rosas Law… mandated that “intellectual disability” replace “mental retardation” in many areas of federal government” (Hallahan 86). When Fairman remarks, “Idiot becomes an insult and gives way to retardation, which in turn suffers the same fate, leading to intellectual disability” he plummets back down the slope.…
According to the medical dictionary mentally retarded means, “persons diagnosed as having significantly lower than average Intelligence and considerable problems in adapting to everyday life or lacking independence in regard to activities of daily living” (Mentally Retarded). So if people in the medical field such as doctors were to say a person is mentally retarded they would mean that person has a lower intelligence than a normal person or might have learning problems. Also according to Wikipedia retard is pejorative word that has the meaning of a person with mental disabilities (Retard n.d.b.). If the word retard is used in a medical practice I would not mind it since the definition is logical and I agree with the medical definition. Urban dictionary is another source that gives the definition as a person born with a mental condition (Retard n.d.c.).…
An intellectual is defined as a person who places a high value on or pursues things of interest to the intellect or the more complex forms and fields of knowledge. This definition of an intellectual has been restricted by an educational system to mean indoctrinate students into what the system believes to be “academic”. Gerald Graff’s essay “Hidden Intellectualism” argues that there is knowledge and intelligence beyond what the traditional education system is practicing. Graff contends that incorporating the interests of students into the lesson will help students think more effectively and logically. “Intellectualism” is seen by how well a student does in traditional subjects.…
All these people have disabilities. They don’t choose to be this way. It’s just how they end up. In the novel, “Of Mice and Men," the author addresses the human rights issue of mental illnesses and this problem is an issue in the US and in other countries. It could be the cause of an accident or it could be a birth defect or just something that happens gradually over time.…
Morgan Freeman once said, “Attacking people with disabilities is the lowest power I can think of .” Everyone is unique and has their own differences. One difference in some people is a disability. A disability is a physical or mental condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities. People think that those who have disabilities are dumb and deaf.…
The adjective and noun “retarded” evokes diverse feelings in today’s society, many of them negative. However, this was not always the case. The word’s original meaning, from the early 17th century, was “held back or in check; hindered, impeded; delayed, deferred,” which was used to describe objects as opposed to people (Simpson, Weiner). It was not until almost the 20th century when “retarded” was used to describe an individual. Therefore, the meaning of retarded has changed meaning from a socially acceptable term to a term that individuals are united against for personal and political reasons.…
The dehumanization of people with disabilities “People with developmental disabilities are regularly dehumanized and devalued. Whenever a group of people is deemed less valuable or less important,” they become exposed to abuse, neglect, discrimination, and treated badly. (Tom Nelson) (2013). There is no doubt Kafka, wrote Greor character with disabling disabilities. He was unable to walk or maneuver his new body.…
