Dorothea Dixx Psychiatric Center (DDPC), also previously known as Bangor Mental Health is located in Bangor Maine and is just one of the two State psychiatric hospitals under the Maine State Department of Health and Human Services. Dorothea Dixx is a 51-bed facility that serves almost two-thirds of the state 's geographic area with referral bases that are statewide and includes prisons, emergency rooms, other psychiatric facilities and group homes. The majority of nursing staff are psychiatric nurses. A psychiatric nurse is a type of nurse who works specifically with mentally ill patients. As a psychiatric nurse, you will work with patients every day towards meeting their treatment goals and assisting them in their journey to recovery. The psychiatric nurse shows up to work at the start of his or her shift and receives hand-off on each patient from the previous shift. This hand-off includes the patients target symptoms which are symptoms that brought them to the hospital, and progress towards treatment goals as well as any other pertinent information that the nurse would need to know before interacting with the patients. QSEN has a set of six competencies that are as follows: patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidenced based practice, quality improvement, safety and informatics. DDPC directly integrates these competencies into their facility. Specifically patient-centered care and teamwork and collaboration. Through their patient-driven treatment efforts and interdisciplinary medical teams they are able to provide holistic, individualized care to each and every patient in which they care for. DDPC The patient drives the treatment, they are the most important member of the treatment plan. Care delivered by the team is aligned with the values and needs of the patient. As a team, they foster and support patients and their families as active participants in health care decision making. They work to empower the patient to enhance their role in prevention and self-care. In order to foster and supper their patient’s they allow them and their families to a chess information and opportunities to ask questions regarding the collaborative care team. DDPC includes families and invites them to attend all treatment plan meetings in person or via phone
