The more startling notion is that these patients believe they are being spared from their symptoms, but at the cost of their health and live. Dr. Jim Weber made an alarming statement in the documentary Doctored, “America is 5% of the world’s population yet we manage to consume over 50% of the worlds pharmaceutical drugs.” When the earnings cease then, health will reign. In order to ensure that doctors are continuing to prescribe the most profitable drugs, pharmaceutical companies give physician’s incentives.…
Every citizen's indifference towards their medication represents the majority of the modern world's attitude towards the…
The Pharmaceutical industry is a $300 billion dollar business which receives a lot of scrutiny in regards to their purpose, side effects, and lucrative schemes (Prescription Drug). The effects of the prescription drugs can be deadly if not used properly. Prescription drugs are responsible for more deaths annually than illegal drugs (Mercola). Ironically, the thing that is supposed to help individuals with their health concerns is actually killing them instead. This is the result of patients receiving prescriptions with the doctor’s expertise. On the other hand, if individuals were permitted to receive medication upon request, regardless of their symptoms or lack thereof, then the consequences would be dire.…
The DEA has worked so hard to cripple the drug cartels in Mexico, but we are forgetting about the even larger drug empire in America: the powerful pharmaceutical industry. This billion-dollar industry is able to distribute copious amounts of painkillers, cough and cold remedies, sleep aids, and fever reducers to our society with no Sturkey 2 repercussions. Of course, these painkillers and other medicines are used to treat many people who are actually in pain, but it is apparent that millions of…
Medical drugs can be dated back from the 1400s medical remedies to the modern medical science now. But theres no timeframe of how people abuse them. Like, back in the 1700 - 1800s it wasn't that big of a deal if someone was abusing medical drugs or just using them in-general. Thought the 1800s and the 1900s use of performance-enhancing drugs was something to “Even the playing field" to people.…
At the beginning of my nursing career most of the medical terms I’ve come to use and understand I had while little knowledge about. Some of these terms I picked up in practical experience and other I learnt in lectures. One of these terms has come to be very important in my nursing career and that is medication management. At first my understanding of this concept was very limited and I didn’t understand many of the different factors that all came together to make up the whole. Over my studies this understanding has evolved and become a core part of my nursing practice.…
Obama proposed a bill that would dedicate 1.1 billion dollars to exterminate the pharmaceutical problem (morning). That is only a fraction of the money spent to fight all the other drugs like heroin, meth, cocaine, etc., therefore the problem is so prevalent. There is an unfathomable amount of people prescribed painkillers within the United States. Thirty-eight percent of the American population use prescription painkillers, meanwhile only thirty-one percent are in use of tobacco products. Opioid painkillers killed around 19,000 people in 2014, that is a greater number of murders committed that year (washingtonpost).…
I like your opinion on the questions for this week’s discussion board. I can sense your passion through the post. I acknowledged the hesitation factor doctors have when prescribing medications as well. I believe like you, that it plays a large part on legitimate prescriptions. With this hesitation from doctors, it can affect a patient who truly needs a higher dose or more potent drug to treat their illness.…
Treatment Inside the War on Drugs Drug addiction is a problem in America. To combat the problem, the United States Government, President Richard Nixon waged a war on drugs (qtd. In US War on Drug). The war on drugs capitalizes on every aspect of the issues except one, which has been left out of the equation. Billions of dollars annually are disbursed for things such as police enforcement and in turn they have focused most of their attention on nonviolent offenders rather than violent criminals.…
This article was very informative to me. After reading this article, it made me think of all the people I know that take prescription drugs. According to reasearchers from the mayo clinic, the antibiotics, antidepressants and painkiller opioids are the most common prescriptions given to Americans. I knew painkillers and antibiotics would be two of the most prescribed, but I was very surprised that antidepressants was in the same category. The article also shows that many people depends on the prescription drugs to help them with their health problems and lifestyle.…
Americans use more prescription drugs than any other developed country. Prescription drugs only represent 12 percent of total health care costs in the United States, but the rising prices of those drugs is an issue that keeps reoccurring not only for patients, but for prescribers, payers, and policy makers. There are people that believe that the rise in price of these drugs is appropriate, but if they keep on rising in price, the United States will start suffering not only financially but medically. Despite a lot of other aspects of the economy rising in price, pharmaceutical drugs should be lowered, or should at least be kept at a reasonable rate. The rise in prices of prescription drugs is an issue that does not seem to be going away…
The assessment needs of the client are based on the need to have medication in a long term nursing setting. The majority of clients that are in a skilled nursing setting need medication, and they cannot take it on their own while they are there. They cannot have medications in their rooms. The nurses or TMAs give the clients their medications when they need them. Many clients rely on the staff that handles the medications to make sure that they are the right medications, the right dose, right route, right time, and that they are getting the medications like the doctors have ordered.…
Science and technology has grown exponentially in recent years, issues such as heart disease and diabetes that once required surgery are now regulated with medicine. It has become routine for doctors to prescribe medicine because it is the easiest solution. Medication is the most efficient way to take care of illness, but what happens if we are prescribing too much? “Prescription painkillers kill six times more people each year than heroin does” (Wen). This harrowing statistic is why over prescription needs to stop.…
Medication is a hazard if it is not managed correctly especially in the hospital. A harm that could come from this is if the correct dosage is not given to the patient like if the patient is diabetic they have to be correct dosage to use for the insulin injection, hence this is a health hazard. For example the dosage that the patient who has diabetes may be increased too much that could be too dangerous and may affect the patient health wise. Another harm for medication is that they all should be prescribed by someone professional like a doctor, so that all medication that the patient takes is written down and how much they should take every day and check if it is safe for them and that any ingredient the person may be allergic to is not in…
Drug administration is an integral part of a nurse’s role. Responsibility for correct administration of medication rest with the nurse, yet medication errors are a persistent problem associated with the nurse practice act. Medication errors are a multidisciplinary problem and multidisciplinary approach is required in order to reduce the incidence of errors. Drug administration forms a major part of the of a process that also involves doctors and pharmacist (Betz & Levy, 1985). Medicines are prescribed by the doctor and dispensed by the pharmacist, but responsibility for the correct administration rests with the registered nurse and student nurse.…
