Strategic politicians have learned about the benefits of knowing how to use the media to their advantage. This can be seen in recent elections and even through the actions of the candidates running in the 2016 presidential election. Many candidates have tried to relate to the younger crowd, and no one has done it better than President Obama. He did skits on late night shows like Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel and appeared in web videos on Funny or Die. Today's candidates like Hillary Clinton are also taking a cue from him, appearing on Saturday Night Live, and the Ellen Degeneres Show. Other presidential hopefuls have gotten on this media chain : Ted Cruz live-streams on Periscope. Marco Rubio uploads stories on his snapchat. Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush argue about student debt through tweets. Rand Paul and Lindsey Graham upload silly videos on Youtube. So, when politicians play to the media, does the media then control politics?
The media also sets the public agenda. The media chooses to focus on certain issues and leaves other ones out- this can help with what gets done in the government, and what issues the government focuses on .
