Teenagers are depicted as emotional and irrational human beings that make decisions based on their feelings instead of logic and because of this, they are deemed unprepared for many things including cancer treatment. Although there is a “solution” that “helps” minors, it does not help enough. The Mature Minor Doctrine is one of the solutions;this document determines whether minors are mature, by a court, are allowed to refuse treatment (Driggs 690-691). This doctrine will help teens who have children or are declared independent more than teens in good standing with their families. These teenagers deserve to be allowed to refuse treatment because they are deemed mature, their life experiences have prepared them, and they understand the treatments.
Teenagers should be allowed to refuse treatment because they are treated like adults when it comes to trials and abortion. In some states, teenagers are allowed to get an abortion without parental permission. The consequences of getting an abortion is far more worse than getting chemotherapy. This proves that minors should not be allowed to make decisions such as refusing treatment. If brain development makes it difficult for minors to make decisions, then minors should not be allowed to drive or leave the sight of their parents. Teenagers should be sheltered.
