Modern dance was developed in the early twentieth century in the state of America. It was established by both Ruth St Denis and Isadora Duncan. In the early 1900 many changes occurred in relation to theoretical dance. Martha Graham was one of the early pioneers who made a significant change to the way people dance by creating a new style/language of dance.
Martha graham was born in 1984 on the 11th of May in Pittsburgh. Graham has spent all her life being a dancer, choreographer and teacher. She decided to set her dream of becoming a dancer after she visited the Mason Opera House for a performance by Ruth Saint-Denis. In the early 1900’s Martha studied dance and theatre at the University of Cumnoch in California. It was here where her journey as a dancer started. When Martha had finally graduated University in 1916 she moved to a dance school run by the famous dancer herself Ruth Saint-Denis as well as Ted Shawn called Denishawn School. It was here she learnt for the first time the world’s dances folk, classical, experimental, oriental and American Indian. (Walter, 2016)

Throughout her career Martha created and choreographed 181 different masterpiece dance compositions. Martha Graham based her dances on American themes, as well as emotions and real life problems. Some of her dances were ‘Deaths and Entrances’ in 1943 and ‘Appalachian Spring’ in 1944. An important piece that showed the impression of what it’s like and what it means to be an American was shown in ‘American Document’ which was choreographed in 1938.
