He started the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in order to organize black owned businesses and create uniformity amongst the black population through the culture of Africa. The “Back to Africa” movement originated from Garvey’s aims to secure the “Blackstar” steamship lines in order to establish economic connections with and settlements in Africa. Although Garvey’s aims failed, he instilled a sense of black identity and pride in Africa in a very tactile way. The mentality of self-knowledge and African solidarity raised the awareness of masses of black people looking for a way out of modern slavery.
