The work of art appears to take the shape of an elongated rectangle. The picture shows thirteen marathon racers running in unison. Starting from the left side, the first marathon runner has a bright white skin color with a dark color attire. But as you go further to the right of the piece the skin color of the runner becomes darker while the attire becomes lighter. Eventually at the far right the runner has very dark skin color and bright white attire. I believe this artist was trying to reveal his feeling in a tangible way we all can see. I also believe he trying to reveal a hidden truth of terms of America’s stagnation with race and class progression even as after the successful movements of the Civil Rights. Nikolai also wanted to have us look at blue collar workers and white collar workers not as lower class and upper class careers but as a type of Yin-Yang because both types of workers depends on one another and one cannot exist without the other.

The beautiful artwork depicts the Holy Virgin Mary in a young, beautiful state unlike pietas made at that point in time. Mary is holding and mourning over the loss of her son Jesus Christ. Jesus in this artwork is also very different from other pietas is Jesus is not horribly disfigured, bloodied, or horrifying. He is in a calm and restful state. Mary also does not look distraught but a graceful acceptance. It almost appears as if he is at peace with the world, his followers, and God. The detail is quite extraordinary for example you can see the outlines of Jesus’s ankle bone, the muscles of his forearms, and the wrinkles on Mary’s brow.
