This central theme holds the plot together because the actions of all the characters revolve around this theme. Will is constantly fighting between trying to improve himself and trying to be safe. For example, Will decides to solve the math theory because he knows he is capable of doing it; however, when Professor Lambeau approaches him, Will quickly scurries off. As the film progresses, Will decides to become emotionally connected and goes to California in order to form a relationship with Skylar. The central theme assists the film in smoothly developing Will’s attitude and behavior. For example one complication that occurs during “Act Two” is when Will begins to lie to Skylar. The reason this adds complications is that Skylar continues to ask Will about his family. As a result, this continues to remind Will about a nonexistent family and his bad upbringing. Another complication that occurs is when Professor Lambeau and Dr. Maguire meet up at a bar in order to discuss the direction Will should go in. This leads to Professor Lambeau expressing his distaste with Dr. Maguire for not adding more pressure to Will. This altercation will further expand later on in the film.
