Seventeen years later, with fourteen of those years spent very happily married to the love of my life, I still wonder what the heck went wrong with that first marriage? Please understand, I am not at all interested in having my old life back. You see, I just don 't ever want to be blindsided like that again. I want to fix things as they break. As it turns out that "in love feeling" that we are initially hit with is actually a chemical reaction of dopamine, norepinephrine and phenylethylamine. Dopamine is the pleasure chemical that produces that giddy feeling. Norepinephrine is like adrenaline and gives you that exited, racing heart feeling. Subsequently, that little cocktail of chemicals swirling around in your body creates elation, intense energy, sleeplessness, craving, loss of appetite and focused attention. Sound familiar? By the way it turns out men more readily produce it because they are more visual. Likewise, another possible explanation for the intense focus and idealizing view is that people in love have lower levels of serotonin. Also, the neural circuits associated with the way we assess others are suppressed. The lower serotonin levels are the same as those found in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder, this could explain why those in love "obsess" about the object of their affection. In studies the evidence suggests that we can get a good two or three years out of this chemical reaction. It is apparent that when you "fall out of love" it is simply because that little chemical reaction in your body has run its course, then a whole new chemical reaction that involves physical love comes in, and that is a whole different subject all
