There can be seen through the character Simon, and include knowledge, innocence, wisdom and civilisation. Simon is seen as the good ‘Christ like’ character, while Jack is the ‘savage’ character of the novel. These themes help to challenge the reader with what the consider to be ‘good’ and ‘evil’ behaviour. The contrast between good and evil is very clear through the book of Lord of the Flies. “Then, amid the roar of bees in the afternoon sunlight, Simon found for them fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands.” (Page 71). In Lord of the Flies, Simon is the only one that helps out the littleluns. Simon also disregards all the savage boys’ behaviour. Some of these are narration, symbolism/motifs, omniscient, foreshadowing, descriptive language, allusion and hyperbole. In this novel, William Golding uses these techniques to enhance the story of Lord of the Flies. “Jack spoke. "Give me a drink." Henry brought him a shell and he drank, watching Piggy and Ralph over the jagged rim. Power lay in the brown swell of his forearms: authority sat on his shoulder and chattered in his ear like an ape.” (Page 185). In this quote, Jack descends into a prehistoric state. Even though Jack is all-powerful, he has no human sense of right or wrong. All Jack wants is power. The technique used in this quote is imagery. Imagery is a visually descriptive or figurative language in a piece of literature. “You’ll get back to where you came from.”(Page 137). This quote shows that Simon is like a prophet and he is foreshadowing his own death two chapters before he dies. Foreshadowing is referring to the use of phrases and hints that set a story to unfold and to give the reader hints of something that is going to happen without spoiling the story.
