To begin, World War I broke out in August, 1914. Germany, Austria- Hungary and the Ottoman Empire were called Central Powers and went against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy and japan were called the Allied Power (“World War I History”). The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the spark that started the war. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was married to Sophie Chotek. He was next in line for the throne of Austria-Hungary until Gavrilo Princip shot him and his wife. Austria- Hungary blamed the Serbian government so they declared war on Serbia July 28,1914. Within a week Belgium, France, Great Britain and Serbia were up against Germany and Austria-Hungary.
