My teaching philosophy is constructed out of critical rationalism and partially out of Ubuntuism. According to Higgs & Smith (2015: 26 – 31) critical rationalism is a philosophy that fosters questioning and anti-authoritarian attributes. My goal as teacher is to enable learners to think for themselves and that is only possible when learners are given the freedom to ask questions without fear of contradiction from the teacher or the so-called …show more content…
If my lesson is to succeed these three approaches will have to be integrated successfully and the CAPS (2011: 9 – 10) supports this statement of mine. The communicative approach according to Evans et al. (2009: 38) can be described as language instruction used for social interaction. Activities based on the communicative approach provides learners with the opportunities to learn and interact through medium of real life scenarios. My lesson complies with this statement from Evans due to the fact that the learners in my lesson will be faced with engaging and presenting a dialogue. The text chosen for the purpose of this dialogue is based on a young adult literature novel “Heroes of Olympus: The Son of Neptune”, the reason why this text is chosen is due to the fact that learners will appreciate this text more because it is based on a series written for the age group that I am teaching. Not only will this text be appropriate due to the fact that is written for the specific age group but also because the genre and topic is of such a nature that it prompts learner co-operation and learning …show more content…
This statement from Richards and Rodgers supports my own belief that I should not only make use of one approach or method but to rather use multiple methods and approaches to insure that all my learners are given equal opportunity for effective learning. When applying my teaching philosophy and approaches I will partially be using the community language learning (CLL) and partially the total physical response (TPR) methods. The reason why I will only be partially using these methods is due to the fact that I want to find and experiment with various methods in order to find a method that works for me and my teaching philosophy. According to Evans (2009: 35 – 37) CLL focusses on group learning and the oral skills when communicating within a group. The CLL also allows learners the freedom to express themselves orally in the manner they most see fit. The learners’ express themselves but the group is seen as a safe haven and attempts to help learners overcome their shyness if they are faced with this problem. The TPR focuses on the bodily actions and the effect that movement has on the remembrance process. The TPR is commonly used as a fun way of learning through dramatisation and
