325 words Like Water for Chocolate is set in the country of Mexico during the Mexican revolution. While on the ranch, actions from the war aren’t so present but the author makes it known that the revolution is going on. Woman were consumed in family life, marriage and their land. Woman and young girls were expected to get married and eventually have children. It was a time in Mexico when woman’s rights were being reevaluated. The author doesn't exactly add any of the hardships that were going on at the time in Mexico. However, Gertrudi's left to be a general in the army and work in a brothel. The novel is told in order of Tita’s life at the end we find out that the narrator is Tita La De Garza The Second, Esperenza’s daughter which was the daughter of Rosaura.
Characters/chararcter traits:
Tita- Tita the protagonist is the youngest daughter, not aloud to marry. She was brought up in the kitchen and is an excellent cook. She suffers all her life from her mother not being able to live how she wants and not being able to experience love and joy. Tita expresses herself and her emotions through food. She changes throughout the novel from being a quite follower of her mothers rules to letting her voice be heard and to stop her suffering and find happiness again
Mama Elena- Mama Elena the antagonist is the main reason for Tita’s suffering, keeping her form her true love. Mama Elena is a widow and it is later revealed that herself once suffered form a lost love. Mama Elena never changes in the novel, her speech and actions represent her as a mean cruel woman that nobody likes including readers. Tita states that she hates
