Mortality- death,fall, Gatsby, George,... The Great Gatsby also shows metaphorical deaths. Gatsby kills his old self, James Gatz, so he can start a new life. The narrator, Nick, is getting older and feels as if his youth is dying. The obsession with living in the past is realized to have been the fear of mortality, or of death. Because of World War I, Fitzgerald wrote about death.

Love- Gatsby is a fool for falling in love. Tom and Daisy have some affection for each other, but it's not love. Jordan and Nick are happy but not committed . Gatsby falls in love, but he is in love with a dream of Daisy, or the idea of being in love. Wilson's feelings for Myrtle are the only feelings of real love in The Great Gatsby. Love in The Great Gatsby is just lies.
American dream- In The Great Gatsby, the American Dream is meant to stand for independence and bring able to succeed with hard work, but it ends up being about materialism and selfish pursuit of pleasure. No matter how much hard work, nothing can change Gatsby's origins. If hard work is not enough, the American Dream is inconceivable .
Heat- caused tension between Gatsby, Daisy and Tom in the summer. This foreshadows Tom and Gatsby's confrontation , and Daisy's tense and reckless reaction to their argument. The heat on the train causes tensions to rise for later in the day. Heat can symbolize intensity and tension or
