Many abolitionists cite the Declaration of Independence by saying that, “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, which among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” (Declaration) They use this to state that America’s forefathers believed that all men were created equal so that should include the slaves; thus, they should also have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. David Walker sates, “America is more our country, than it is the whites-we have enriched it with our blood and tears. The greatest riches in all America have arisen from our blood and tears.” (Walker) They believe that America belonged more to the slaves because the slaves did most of the work and put their blood, sweat, and tears into it. The slaves just wanted to be viewed as equals; they were not happy with the whites at that time because they had to work under them in cruel environments. The abolitionists believed that the slaves should be treated as equals and given the same rights as everyone else. Nobody wants to leave feeling like they are under the control of someone else; that is why the American colonists wanted independence from Great Britain.
