Originated from the Greek word, “autós” and autism was used by Bleuler to define these individuals with abnormal self admiration and severe withdrawal from others. Decades later, Hans Asperger and Leo Kanner pioneered into the research of autism. In 1943, child psychiatrist Leo Kanner published a paper describing a subset of children who were highly intelligent however exhibited “a powerful desire for aloneness” and “an obsessive insistence on persistent sameness”. He also stated that these children had difficulty adapting to changes…
In the section I read today, it focused on two things: When an autistic offspring was likely and the unfortunate oblivion of people who are diagnosed with autism. It started off with a man boarding a cruise ship with computer programmers, and interviewing them about their personal life. People who are more creative and intellectual most likely have autistic genes, but too much of it causes borderline autism. His discovery was that most engineers on the ship had autistic children. Later it was found that technicians and engineers do have the autism trait in them, that's what makes them more capable of remembering details, and creating new designs.. Leo Kanner was a Psychiatrist who observed eleven of his young patients with a similar condition…
The design of proper diagnostic evaluations of ASD lends itself to best practices in the assessment of this disorder. Accurate diagnoses require that instruments are designed to assess the multiple domains that ASD affects which include functioning and behavior, and that parents and caregivers are involved and engaged, seeing how they are also active partners. It is also imperative that physicians, and pediatricians, in particular, serve an advocacy role in the healthcare systems to make sure that all families can access proper diagnostic and treatment services. In fact, the rate at which children are being diagnosed with autism has prompted many heated discussions and, perhaps conversely, served an integral role in increasing autism awareness; though, this was not always the case. Indeed, before the 1940s individuals with autism were thought to be suffering from an emotional disturbance, schizophrenia, or psychosis (Baker, 2013; Hanley & Quinn, 2003). However, with the work of psychiatrists like Leo Kanner, the definition of autism began to expand, be refined, and finally grow to encompass all that is now known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although the word autism had been around much longer, in 1908 it was applied to the withdrawn nature of those suffering from schizophrenia…
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects the brain’s development of social and communication skills. A person with autism may have repetitive behaviors, social challenges, and communication difficulties which last throughout a person’s lifetime. About one percent of the world’s population is living with autism, and about 3.5 million Americans are living with an ASD. There is no known single cause for autism, but most accept that autism is caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function. Brain scans show differences in the brain structure when compared to a neurotypical brain (Autism-Society).…
Autism is one of the most important genetic disorders. Autism is also known as autism spectrum disorder, Kanner autism, pervasive developmental disorder, and high-functioning autism. Eugen Bleuler, a Swiss psychiatrist, was the first person to use the term autism. He started using that term at around 1911 to a group of symptoms of schizophrenia, which is a long term mental disorder involving the breakdown in the relation between emotion, thought, and behavior. In 1943, Leo Kanner discovered autism.…
Autism spectrum disorder, also known as ASD, refers to a wide variety of developmental disorders. It includes a wide range, or spectrum, of skills, symptoms, and levels of disability. Since it is a spectrum, people who have ASD can vary from being high functioning or severely impaired. As well as explaining the overall symptoms of ASD, this paper will also explore a specific type of ASD called, Asperger’s syndrome known as being on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum. However, there are many common characteristics across the autism spectrum.…
One in 68 children are now diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a thirty percent increase from just two years ago. As people gain more knowledge about the numerous symptoms and behaviors that show early signs of autism, they immediately begin diagnosing and planning what to do for this child without looking at any other possibilities. Learning and attention disabilities are a serious condition that is often misdiagnosed as autism spectrum disorder due to the overlapping symptoms and behaviors that are predominant in each; however, there are significant differences that separate the two showing they are not the same condition, nor should they be treated that way. Autism spectrum disorder is becoming more common each year and consists…
Kanner studied 11 children, one of which he had special interest in. Subjective and objective data was collected on that specific child. His symptoms depicted that he was: happiest when he was alone... drawing into a shell and living within himself... unmindful to everything around him, he had a mania for spinning toys, liked to shake his head from side to side and spin himself around in circles, and he had temper tantrums when his routine was disrupted, he referred to himself in the third person, he repeated words and phrases spoken to him, and communicated his own desires by attributing them to others (Vatanoglu-Lutz et al., 2014). From these observations, the study of autism became…
The medical definition of autism, as listed by Heward (2006), is that it is a neurobehavioral syndrome that consists of impairments of social interaction, communication, and restricted repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Autism was first used to describe children in 1943 by psychiatrist Leo Kanner at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. According to Kanner’s case reports, 11 children displayed behaviors that were completely different from any other behavior that had been reported. These children all shared difficulty relating to others, seemed isolated from the outside world, showed resistance to being held by parents, speech deficits, specific food preferences, desire for repetition and sameness, lack of imagination,…
Background The background of Autism, how did it all begin? Before Autism was named, our ancestors did not know what it was, but they label it as being mentally retarded.” Eugene Bleuler a Swiss psychiatrist, was the first to use the term in 1911, refer to one in the group symptoms of schizophrenia” (www.webmd.com).…
The need for these individuals to be diagnosed and treated is paramount to their future success. The proper training and teaching skills need to be implemented early in their lives, in order to try and help them overcome this disability and function successfully. Strict structure is very important in the upbringing of individuals with ASD, this structure gives them consistency which is very important in being able to react to the world. With the recent changes in DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) the separation between autism and Asperger’s syndrome is being merged. In this new diagnosis tool, there will be no difference between the two mental disorders.…
Because autism is been increasing in the past years, it is considered one of the fastest-growing developmental disability in the USA. Autism is complex and becoming more common, therefore it would be beneficial for the general public to understand the symptoms, treatments, and what it is to live with someone with it. Autism usually appears before the age of…
Autism is a mental disability, present from early childhood, characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts. Autism can be identified in toddlers, mostly boys, from 18 to 30 months in age. According to Rapin (1997), “parents and pediatricians usually detect the disease when they notice the child’s lack of speech development and a lack of normal interest in others or a regression of early speech and sociability” (p. 97). Few disorders seem more confusing than autism.…
Matt is a 5 year old autistic male, who lives with his parents and older brother in Toronto. He was diagnosed at three with Autism Spectrum Disorder; he is nonverbal and communicates through PECS and is presently learning to sign. The assessment provided the family and intervention team information critical for setting goals for Matt. Matt’s mother is still having difficulty accepting that her son has Autism, but is willing to do anything to help him in any way that she can. Matt was placed in an early intervention ABA program where he has done well.…
