ACCLAIMED NURSE THEORIST SPEAKS AT NSU (Ft. Lauderdale, FL, March 31st, 2015) Madeleine Leininger, a proclaimed nurse theorist, writer, researcher, educator, will be the next speaker at Nova Southeastern University in honor of National Nurse Theorist week, April 2, 2015. Leininger will discuss the importance of cultural and care knowledge required in patient care to support compliance, healing and wellness.
Leininger’s transcultural nursing model enhances the quality of culturally congruent, competent, and impartial care that results in improved health for everyone worldwide. Leininger’s transcultural nursing model advanced into a movement in nursing care. Leininger’s model assessment provides a holistic, comprehensive overview of the patient’s background. Leininger recognized through observation the lack of cultural and care knowledge while working with nurses. A nurse’s awareness and sensitivity to the cultural needs of clients is important for care. Leininger states there are three modes for guiding nurses judgements or actions in order to provide care: preservation and/ or maintenance, accommodation and/ or negotiation, and repatterning and/ or restructuring. These modes involve the use of generic and professional knowledge as well as diverse ideas put together to implement nursing care actions and goals.
