Several differences exist between bystanders and upstanders. In fact, a bystander is an individual who is present at a situation but does not take part. For example, the Kitty Genovese case is viewed as a bystander situation. This innocent woman was murdered due to the fact the Genovese's neighbors where afraid of the authorities and research has shown that the more bystander present the less possibility of any individual will take action. An upstander is a person that has the bravery to stand up for their own beliefs. For example, a person who has the guts to stand up to a bully picking on a certain person may resemble an upstander for the reason this person is standing for the belief that bullying is cruel. Personal choices tend factor into bystanders and upstanders in the light of the fact that people tend to bandwagon upon others
