The highly popular debate on whether or not college tuition should be free for every American citizen has been long argued back and forth. In Keith Ellison’s article “The Argument for Tuition-Free College” he brings to the table some facts and reasoning on why every American should be entitled to tuition free college. Keith starts off right away by informing the reader of the increasing student loan debt that is placing so many college students into unstable economic situations after graduating. He then touches on how this extremely expensive schooling is making it nearly impossible for families of low income and unfortunate backgrounds to send their kids to get the education they deserve. All that money has to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is taxes. Keith states in his article that, “This country is also the wealthiest in the history of the world. We can afford to make college an option for every American family.”(par 14.). The USA may be the wealthiest country in the world, but not every family is wealthy and can afford to pay increased taxes. With the constantly increasing population, American citizens would have to pay more and more in taxes each year to be able to pay for every person that wishes to receive free college tuition. Along with tuition free college would come a lot more people attending college, and campuses would have to expand and do renovations to accommodate for the large amount of additional people attending college. All these expansions and renovations will cost loads of money, which again would end up costing taxpayers even more money. For those families who don't have kids, or have kids who don't plan on attending college, they end up feeding tax dollars into something that will never benefit them. On the other hand, you have many rich families who can more than afford to send their kids to college, but now they get to reap the new benefits that should have been a benefit to low income families trying to get their kids an education. Having grad school tuition free would eventually devalue that degree, making all schooling an endless circle of receiving pointless pieces of paper after graduating while costing tax payers a fortune for it. If our country wants to keep the value in a degree, then making college tuition free is not the way to go about it. College debt isn't usually seen as a benefit to anyone. But in a way it is. Having debt and learning how to manage money and successfully pay it off is a very important skill that will come much into play in a students future life. When it comes time in life to take out a loan for a new car or a house, those students which learned to manage their college debt will be the ones who already have experience handling financial situations like this and will be best prepared to manage their loans.
