The ultimate goal was to not focus solely on the crimes committed by the juvenile, but to assist to their needs and provide the appropriate rehabilitation. In Edward Humes’ book, No Matter How Loud I Shout: A Year in the Life of Juvenile Court, we are able to witness the downfall of such a once, promising system. Throughout the book, the author forms a numerous amount of observations about the disorganization within the system, evaluates those who work for the system, and mentors the juveniles whose lives were spent in and out the…

The governor of Connecticut recently proposed raising the age of juvenile jurisdiction to twenty-one as a way of keeping young offenders out of incarceration. In the ensuing debates on whether this is a good idea or not, experts also disputed the appropriate cut off age for juvenile court. Carmen Daugherty, in her article “No One Younger Than 18 Should Be Tried as an Adult,” suggests eighteen as the age limit. She attempts to persuade readers that the practice of trying, sentencing, and incarcerating youth under eighteen in the adult criminal justice system should be terminated as it fails to meet the needs of adolescents. Daugherty appeals to logos to support her claim.…
The House of Refuge in New York, which opened in 1824, was the first adolescent place of change in the United States. This was the first endeavor to house adolescent guilty parties in a different office and different States, as Maryland, would soon go with the same pattern. In 1899, Cook County in the State of Illinois built up the first adolescent court. Inside of 30 years, basically the greater part of the states had set up adolescent courts.…
The first nation’s juvenile court was established in Cook County, Illinois. One of the first judge at the nation’s juvenile court, judge Julian Mack stated the goal for the early juvenile court would be that “The child… be made to know that he is face to face with the power of the state, and more emphatically, be made to feel that he is the object of its care and solicitude,” (Pa, Rt.). Although many people in the United States believe that juveniles should not be tried as adults it is more appropriate to teach juveniles a lesson because no one knows what their instincts are, and it can be a threat to society because they will always have that negative mentality in mind. What solutions are there to these situations, or can there be any resolution…
Historically, the juvenile court system was founded by a group of Progressive reformers who understood that children were less culpable than adults and more responsive to rehabilitation. Brought on by the Civil Rights era and continuing into the twenty-first century however, juvenile courts switched from treatment based and took on an approach more punishment focused. When the nation switched from a largely rural society to a now urban developed one, the media focused their attention on the victims of juvenile offenders as a distraction to combat the unseasonable transition. Specifically pressing the issue of public safety and ultimately demanding accountability from the juveniles in lieu of rehabilitation. The media’s focus lead many states…
Is it okay to try youth offenders as adults? This topic is very controversial as it could potentially put adolescents in harm's way in an adult prison. Although, some might argue that the perpetrator deserves a worse punishment, maybe even the death penalty. Juveniles are not given a trial by jury, but they should be tried by a jury to give them a more fair case. Granted, juvenile cases may fluctuate from accounts of petty theft or vandalism to very serious accounts of murder or rape.…

“And I see the- you know, when I go to the juvenile detention centers and prisons, I see people who can’t read now. And I know when they leave those prisons and those detention centers, they’re not going to be able to make it in our society. ”-Walter Dean Myers. If we do not take a stand to youth spending 15 to life in jail we’re not benefiting our society but instead we’re tearing it down. Not only are kids as young as 6 being sent to jail but also most of them are being charged with felony murder in which they aren 't even the ones committing the crimes.…
Kids in some states are prosecuted as adults when they're at the age of 12 or 13. In the state of Georgia kids are prosecuted and sent to a juvenile facility until their 18th birthday then sent to jail. Stories of kids being prosecuted like this aren't uncommon you hear about them every other week. Juveniles should not be tried as adults for it is wrong to hold adolescents, under the legal age, to adult standards. If children do not even receive the same rights as adults in the first place, it makes no sense to try them in adult court. These juveniles should have the opportunity to be rehabilitated in a positive manner, for they tend to come from troubled households and violent neighborhoods. In over half of the cases these troubled kids don’t know any different way than a life of crime when surrounded by both social and environmental factors that influence their delinquent actions. One must commemorate that juveniles are mentally underdeveloped, and still have time to innovate if their issues are dealt with precisely and accurately.…
