“You finally going to give my phone call, officer?” I said with a scoff.

In 1985 a book by Michael Gold came out about Walter Nelson-Rees’s campaign to stop HeLa contamination. The book was called A Conspiracy of Cells: One Woman’s Immortal Legacy and the Medical Scandal it Caused. Deborah was reading the book when she discovered information he had not given permission for the public to know. “No one in Henrietta’s family had ever seen those medical records, let alone given anyone at Hopkins permission to release them to a journalist for publication in a book the whole world can see.” (Skloot pg. 210)…
In his essay “The Lives of a Cell,” Lewis Thomas notes that although humans think of themselves to be independent of nature, they are fundamentally interconnected with other living organisms. Humans aren’t just connected in the larger sense of the planet, says Thomas, but also at the cellular level. Thomas argues that human survival wouldn’t be possible without the help from the microscopic and independently acting organisms that are present in the human body. Organisms such as mitochondria and bacteria are relied on by humans, just like other living things depend on other organisms in a similar manner. Thomas notes that viruses could be viewed as an evolutionary ability, helping to insert DNA.…
In the case of Fare v. Michael C. (1979), the United States Supreme Court rejected the California Supreme Court’s position that a juvenile's request to see his probation officer constitutes an invocation of the right to remain silent within the context of Miranda v. Arizona (1966). Sixteen year old Michael C. was taken into custody by the Van Nuys, California police department on suspicion of murder. After being advised of his Maranda rights, and acknowledging he understood them, he was asked if he wanted an attorney. His response was, “Can I have my probation officer here?” (Page 442 U. S. 710).…
Moving as swiftly as possible through the dark, rutted, war-torn streets of Charleston Allie hoped with all her might that her grandparent’s house still stood. Having crawled from the cellar only moments before following Gabriel and Willie through a back entrance that Allie had not known was there, she and her small band of loved ones hurried onward trying to avoid death or capture by the Yankees. Earlier that day, they had barely escaped the house and entered the cellar, all clinging to one another as a terrible noise accompanied by a huge rumble, thundered overhead. It traveled through the entire building, shaking it to its foundation!…

For three years, Father had refused the idea of leaving North Carolina. But my brother, Ben, sent us another letter, addressed as he always did to John Benjamin Wilks and Katie. In the letter Ben was praising his new farm, the richness of the land and how many more acres he was clearing. He told of the bountiful crops of corn and wheat that he would be reaping in a few weeks, more corn and wheat per acre than Father had ever gotten from our old worn out farm in North Carolina. He told of the abundance of water, game, and timber.…
"Time for tea, Miss. " Abigail's frail voice rung out, her voice slightly muffled by her quiet knocking - although she had need not to - I was nearly out the door. "Yes, I'll be on my way. " It had seem that this tea time was rather, ineluctable.…
Quiet footsteps echoed off the alley walls. In the distance, the sound of a dog howling and glass shattering could be heard. Theo walked home alone down the empty alley, music blasting in his ears. Unfortunately for Theo, today was the day, the day that he dreaded every single year. The memory was so clear in his mind, it replayed in his head over and over again.…
I opened my eyes and I tore the covers off like wrapping paper on a Christmas present. The pictures a blur as I race my brother for the hot morning waffles. I always know when to come out of my bed when my mom sings her battle cry of “ COME GET ‘EM WHILE THEY’RE HOT AND READY!” As I come down Mitchell is already halfway out the door with two waffles in his mouth like a dog.…

I hear footsteps making their way down the old brown rickety stairs case “ milla “ my dad says in a trembling scared voice I reply “ dad?…
The auditorium overflowed with fellow students all of whom had just completed state testing. The clock seemed to stand still as my stomach was ravenous for lunch. I did not hear the thud. I never saw the kid dash across the room knocking into something. It was all so sudden when the massive, standing stage light crashed into the back of my head.…
Particularly in the Road, where all moral and cultural institutions known to humankind have been extinguished, religion and the belief in supernatural beings are at the forefront of the father’s thinking. In a world where humanity and kindness are mostly extinct, it is evident that the father adheres to the thought there might be a God-like figure. Religious and spiritual terms are often used throughout the novel, although the man often doubts the existence of a God and repeatedly curses him: He started down the rough wooden steps. […] Coldness and damp.…
I had a dream; there were three of them. In my dream, I was sitting in a car on a rocky and sandy dirt road with one friend in the front and three in the back of a Honda Accord. Behind me was three men; I was so scared and shaky I didn 't know what to do. The lights just flashed red, blue, and white behind me.…
