Leadership is defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization, but a larger question becomes, is leadership a simple action? When one thinks about popular leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Rosa Parks, and even unpopular leaders, Napoleon and Hitler. These leaders did not simply lead a group of people, there was more to their action. Bridgeforth has taught me what truly mentoring someone can do for them and the effects that it can have on someone’s life. Explaining how Dr. Bridgeforth came from the poorest of poor situations that he did, going to his first day of undergrad and almost being present for a drive by shooting, going to another college and sleeping next to a guy who had pound of weed, and finally resorting to commuting an hour and a half one way just to really start college. Something intervened in Dr. Bridgeforth’s life, along with some personal perseverance, because there are not many if any freshmen that are going to go through the experiences that Dr. Bridgeforth went through and stick with college. It took the right people in speaking up in Dr. Bridgeforth’s life at his first real institution giving him that first chance with that Resident Assistant position that changed his life for good. That opportunity is where Dr. Bridgeforth’s life changed, someone else invested, and most importantly challenged him. Honestly, I would not have had what it took to come through everything that Dr. Bridgeforth has come through, I would have most likely given up and settled for a minimum wage job.
