The late 1950’s and early 1960’s were filled with crisis, the Cold War had been escalating since the mid 1940’s. Some have said that since World War II you can see the mutual distrust between the Western Powers and the Soviet Union and the challenge that communism posed towards capitalism so it was no surprise to many when The Cold War began. It started two years after World War II between The Eastern Bloc and The Western Bloc. With the threat of a nuclear war, both sides began to create more and more powerful nuclear weapons and were heavily armed and ready, in case of an attack. Both sides had plans for when and if a nuclear war broke loose and that kept the other side from attacking. The first phase of the war began two years after World War II ended. The Soviet Union hardened its control over the states of the Eastern Bloc and the United States had a strategy of “containment” to challenge Soviet Power because of Western Democracies did not like the idea of a communist state. Even more so because they were living through those hard times. They needed a positive outlook on the country, motivation to help, the strength to keep going, the hope that things will get better, and that the changes that they are planning to make will make the country thrive. The speech gave them exactly that. Since the speech was given, history and present day problems show us that at the end of the day, American’s will help out one another in times of need and we remain having Patriotic pride in times of crisis. I enjoyed listening to this speech. He worded everything very poetically so it makes you want to keep listening. He speaks very clearly and confidently, something I pay a lot of attention to when hearing people speak. It sounds like he believes every word he is saying one hundred percent, would you really want a president that did not believe in himself? His speech motivates and inspires me to want to do something for this country. Even though I was not alive during the time he was president it gave me hope for a better country so I can only imagine the impact it had on the people during that time. To me that is what makes a President’s speech a memorable one, if it motivates us, gives us hope, and gives us more pride in our country.
