He was known as the greatest south Carolinian in united states history because of what he accomplished and what he was known for doing. One accomplishments led him to be a part of the court of united states and vice president.
He was the first American to ever sever all 3 terms in the united states court of laws. The crisis began may 1828 , when congress passed the tariff of 1828, which was designed to encourage northerners industry. This made the southerners unhappy because they would have to pay more for manufactured goods. Later on Andrew Jackson wanted to rise protective tariff rates, although Calhoun strongly opposed it. This tariff became known as "the tariff of abomination", it was called this because it was believe to hurt and abominate the southern. He introduce the theory of nullification, that states theory's has the right to nullify any federal laws. John c Calhoun quoted " slavery is a positive good " in his speech on February 6, 1837.

He also served secretary of state in 1954 – 1947. James served all 3 branches, he was the first American to complete this along with john c Calhoun, he also served the supreme court in 1941. James F. Byrnes was involved in world war 2, and he led the department of state during the transition from world war 2 into the cold war. Although he was involved in world war 2, he was also a part of the Franklin D. Roosevelt "Brian Trust ". he was a big fan of segregation , On may 17,1954 many people were upset about black schools not being equal with whites ,or that black people cannot go to the same school as the white people do. Although Byrnes agreed to the blacks having different schools than the white the supreme court had a trail about this, and the trail says the schools cannot be together but they must be equal to each other. The name of this trial was called the Brown vs The Board of Education. Later on through the year Byrnes begins to place taxes on blacks schools. This made the back people pay more money ,which made them become unequal to the white schools. From the information above you can tell that James F.
