I have always loved music, but never had I felt more fulfilled then when listening to psychedelic rock. I spend most of my free time listening to albums by the artists I will be discussing in this essay. I’m going to first talk about Jimi Hendrix who is one of my personal favorites. Jimi Hendrix was regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in history. He has said that his acid “trips” influenced his ideas for his music, often basing them off of past experiences. He was a wonderful guitarist, and very influential. I love to listen to his music, because it is so beautiful. He has blues and jazz influences in his music, and I love how he can improvise on stage at any given time. I like to watch his live videos at various festivals he has attended, like Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock. Jimi is very well known for his ability to manipulate the feedback from his guitar. For example, The Doors lead singer, Jim Morrison, was heavy in the drug scene. He often passed out drunk on stage, ending his concerts and making his fans upset. But on the flip side, when you hear the first high pitched notes of the organ, you’re drawn in. A band member even said that Jim Morrison “lived on canned beans and LSD”. This may be shocking because you wouldn’t think someone with so much talent would do this to their self, but alas, Jim Morrison had his own problems that he didn’t know how to deal with.
The most well-known festival that was held in the mid 60’s, was the Woodstock Music Festival. Many amazing artists performed there, like Jefferson Airplane and Jimi Hendrix. But most importantly, the Summer of Love movement was a social phenomenon for the counterculture but many people in my generation don’t recognize and respect the movement. I have always wished I could have grew up in the mid 60’s, just to experience the opportunity to see these amazing, legendary artists play live on stage, only a few feet from me.
Psychedelic Rock impacted a whole culture, derived out of a counterculture movement. They really made their opinions well known and promoted peaceful gatherings. They should be known about, as I have learned so much from researching this culture and listening to the beautiful music. I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t listen to this wonderful,
