Jesus of Nazareth is one of the most well-known figures of history. He lived more than two thousand years ago and yet he has more than a billion followers world-wide (Web 2018). The details surrounding his birth, life, death and resurrection are unique and many details are foretold in Old Testament, the Christian sacred scriptures. The claims that Jesus made about himself infuriated the religious establishment of his day and they had him crucified. Every aspect of Jesus’ life was extraordinary and worth examining. The gospel writings of Matthew and Luke both tell the story of the birth of Jesus. His first miracle was turning water into wine at a wedding celebration (John 2:1-11). Jesus also demonstrates authority over nature when he orders the wind and waves to be quiet and when he walks on water out to his disciples (Mark 4:35-41, Matthew 14:22-33). Jesus also raises two people to life from the dead, Lazarus and a young girl (John 11:17-44, Matthew 9:18-26). Jesus repeatedly heals the sick, lame, blind, and those with leprosy in all four gospels. In the book of Luke Jesus reads from the book of Isaiah in the synagogue on the Sabbath and claims to fulfill the prophecy: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because he has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord” (Luke 4:18, Isaiah 61:1,2).
